The names Hill and Askari are synonymous with cricket umpiring in Christchurch, with Matthew and Altamash being regulars on the scene for a number of years, officiating in EV Power Premier Women’s and OEM Audio Premier Men’s games.
In past weeks however, we have seen more Hills and Askaris out in the middle as sons of both men have taken the first steps in their umpiring journey.
Inspired by their fathers, teenagers Arshaan Askari, Robert Hill and Alan Hill have all stepped up to the mark, firstly to help their dads but now they are making a name for themselves as up-and-coming match officials in their own right.
Alan Hill has watched his Dad umpire many games and he thought he’d like to give it a try. So far so good. Alan is enjoying meeting different people and loves being involved in the game.
“I feel really satisfied getting my Level 2 qualification and am looking forward to continuing to improve at umpiring. I appreciated the training I have had from David Henderson and Dad teaching me the laws and how to umpire. The players and captains so far have been really supportive too, it’s been a positive experience.”
Robert Hill loves playing cricket but has also decided to give umpiring a go so he can help make the game fair as well as getting a good view of the game.
“Learning to umpire has allowed me to find out more about the rules of the game and how it is played. I’m also pleased I’m going to be able to put Level 2 umpire on my CV” He said.
Arshaan started umpiring after completing his Level 1 qualification three years ago, deciding to give something back to the game.
He is a regular umpire for the CMCA Twilight Cricket, has umpired the Club 100, the Christchurch Premier League and CMCA All Nations Festival.
Altamash started Saturday umpiring with his Dad in 2023, firstly standing at square leg, but has now stepped up, having also recently fully officiated in an EV Power Premier Women’s game earlier this month.
Like Robert and Alan, Arshaan is also working towards his Level 2 Qualification and aims to continue umpiring as much as possible when not playing cricket for Christchurch Boys HS.
Captain’s reports have commented on the knowledge and confidence of the trio and are quick to sing their praises.
Not only are these three young men paving the way towards higher level umpiring they are also getting a few dollars in their pockets for their troubles as well!
